The name of Mitchell Schorr is widely recognized across the United States. Known for both oil paintings and large-scale murals, the artist has built a diverse portfolio, with the “Da Race on Wheels” art van holding a unique place within it.
Mitchell Schorr: American street muralist and painter
Born in New York, Schorr works across studio and public spaces, creating oil paintings alongside expansive street murals. His outdoor works—produced with property owners’ consent—can be seen throughout the country. At the core of his practice is the idea of dissolving the boundary between gallery art and urban space, with a strong emphasis on movement and energy.
For more than two decades, Schorr has been painting 3D murals in New York’s parks, contributing to what many consider a contemporary form of community landscape art. His work resonates with a broad audience while also gaining recognition in professional circles, including exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Mezzanine Gallery and Galerie Mourlot in New York.
The “Da Race” series: nostalgia and playfulness
Among Schorr’s most recognizable projects is the “Da Race” series—a vibrant collection of whimsical racecars engaged in a playful, imaginative competition. A recurring character is the nostalgic Softie ice cream truck, a familiar symbol for many Americans.
Schorr has created more than 100 Da Race murals across cities such as New York and Detroit, with additional works appearing internationally, including in Hong Kong. Each mural is designed to make art approachable, joyful, and emotionally engaging.
“Da Race on Wheels”: an art van with a unique philosophy
In 2021, Mitchell Schorr collaborated with the art logistics company Fine Art Shippers to create “Da Race on Wheels,” a fully realized art van. This project was born out of the joint desire to make art accessible to people beyond the confines of galleries and museums. The moving art object was made to spark interest in art among Americans, seeing it in the streets of their hometowns, embedded in routine human lives instead of carefully planned art venue visits.
After years on the road, the art van is now available for acquisition. Its next chapter calls for careful conservation, ensuring that this distinctive piece continues to preserve and communicate Mitchell Schorr’s artistic legacy.
